Bringing Care Closer to Home: Quincy Valley Medical Center
Located in Washington’s Central Valley, the rural town of Quincy was facing a critical healthcare need. Their existing hospital, Quincy Valley Medical Center (QVMC), was outdated and insufficient to meet the needs of the growing population. As a result, residents often had to travel long distances for essential health services like imaging and physical therapy.
The hospital had engaged The Healthcare Collaborative Group (THGC) for design and master planning of the project, but still needed someone to manage the day-to-day logistics of construction. Having worked with us on prior engagements, THGC understood the value of our practical construction expertise and we formed a partnership to bring the project to fruition.
Working smarter
Our first challenge was getting all the required documents into the county permits office before the new Washington State energy code went into effect. Typically, the process takes a year—we did it in under six months. Our rapid response allowed the project to move forward under the existing code, saving the client significant construction costs.
Scoping was another issue. During a financial analysis of the proposed 55,000 sq. ft. facility, we discovered that the current design was over budget. Working as a team with THCG, we added a second floor and moved some of the patient rooms to the second level. By building up instead of out, we were able to reduce the number of exterior walls and roofing materials, creating a more cost-efficient building and bringing the budget back into alignment.
We also added value through our innovative approach to scheduling. In reviewing the contractor’s proposal, we strategically packaged construction releases so that the design team could finalize the design on certain aspects and the contractor could submit their pricing at different milestones. By aligning these two efforts, we received approval to begin work sooner and avoided price escalations caused by unnecessary delays.
Trust, integrity, and collaboration
Our expertise, sound fiscal guidance and collaborative approach quickly earned us the trust of the Board of Directors. When key decisions needed to be made, they followed our recommendations and gave us an answer, often on the same day. And when we needed to engage with outside stakeholders, they knew that we would represent their organization in the best possible light.
Preliminary work is now underway on the new state-of-the-art facility, which will feature a comprehensive range of healthcare services including six in-patient rooms, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, and a helipad.
With over 150 years of combined experience in the healthcare space, our team understands the important role these facilities play in the well-being of rural communities. We’re proud to help bring more accessible healthcare to Quincy so that more people can get the care they need, right in their own backyard.
